Strings and Beats in Perfect Harmony

Prepare to be mesmerised by the enchanting sounds of Eeshar Singh, one of the UK’s most talented young santoor players. A disciple of the late Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma’s musical tradition, Eeshar brings both technical brilliance and soulful depth to his performances. With the shimmering tones of the santoor, he weaves intricate melodies that transport listeners into the rich world of classical Indian music. His artistry blends youthful energy with a deep respect for tradition, making his music both accessible and profoundly moving.

Accompanying him on tabla is the dynamic Surdarshan Singh, whose rhythmic mastery provides the perfect counterpart to the santoor’s lyrical flow. A versatile percussionist with a finely tuned ear, Surdarshan creates layers of rhythm that elevate each performance, balancing subtlety with striking power. Together, their synergy promises an evening of captivating improvisation, precision, and emotion – a true celebration of Indian classical music in Leicester.

Eeshar Singh | Raag Kaunsi Kanada

Eeshar Singh | Raag Kaunsi Kanada

Recorded at Darbar Festival 2022, on 15th October, at the Milton Court Concert Hall, Barbican. Musicians: - Eeshar Singh (Santoor) - Yashwant Vaishnav (Tabla) Raag Kaunsi Kanada, Thaat: Asavari, Samay: Midnight Captivating sublime music of santoor by Eeshar Singh and the tabla by Yashwant Vaishnav An instrument brought into the Indian classical form by Pandit Shivkumar Sharma half a century ago, his student Harjinder Matharu has produced one of the finest young Bradford born emerging young talents, Eeshar Singh. Darbar is proud to present his first major London concert. Singh’s musical maturity precedes him as he presents afternoon ragas from the north Indian classical style. This complex instrument produces a beautiful trance like sound, which Sufi mystics use as an accompanying instrument in their divine music. He is accompanied by the child prodigy tabla player Vaishnav, who accompanies this percussive style instrument the santoor in a sophisticated and intellectually breathtaking improvisational groovy rhythm. The structure of the performance elements includes loosely the alaap, where the raga is slowly unfolded into its mood and musical phrases, to the jor – which brings the rhythmic development to a slight pulse – to the jhalla, the fast-paced improvisation and trance like, ecstatic state. Submit your senses to afternoon ragas as Singh blends resplendent vocal colour that will wash away the hustle and bustle of daily life.   Subscribe to the Darbar Player to access the full, uncut performance.
