Be transported by the virtuosic bow work of the acclaimed Akkarai Sisters as their violins dance through intricate South Indian ragas with breathtaking precision and emotional depth. Their melodic conversation finds perfect rhythmic counterpoint in Patri Satish Kumar’s masterful mridangam playing and the earthy, resonant tones of Ghatam Udupa’s clay pot percussion. After the interval, journey northward as Ruchira Kedar’s stunning vocals unfold the ornate tapestries of khayal singing in the revered Gwalior-Jaipur style. Her voice – in turn delicate and commanding – explores the emotional landscapes of North Indian ragas, supported by Vaishnav’s sensitive tabla accompaniment and the harmonic foundation of Deochake’s harmonium.

Ranjani & Gayatri | Raga Kapi

Musicians: - Ranjani & Gayatri (Carnatic vocals) Ranjani and Gayatri are sisters who sing and play Carnatic music on violin. They were born into a musical family and their talent was recognised very early (it is said that they could identify complex rhythmic patterns and hundreds of different ragas by early childhood). They trained within the family, as well as receiving violin lessons from T.S. Krishnaswami and vocal instruction from P. S. Narayanaswamy. They are notable as prolific song composers, and for fusing ideas from Hindustani and Carnatic music. Kāpi is a popular rāga in Carnatic music, the classical music of South India. Kāpi is a janya rāgam of Kharaharapriya with a meandering vakra scale. Typically performed at slow and medium speeds, it is capable of inducing moods of devotion, pathos and sadness in the listeners. Kāpi is different from the Hindustani raag and thaat Kafi. The equivalent raag in Hindustani is Pilu. Here's a traditional composition by Thyagaraja, also known as Thyāgayya and in full as Kakarla Thyagabrahmam, who was a composer and vocalist of Carnatic music, a form of Indian classical music.
