Pandit Nirmalya Dey is a master vocalist of the Dagarvani Dhrupad, known for patient, detailed elaboration of some of North India’s oldest musical forms. He took advanced training from Ustad Zia Fariduddin Dagar for 26 years, and regularly appeared with his guru on stage. He initially pursued a career as a cost accountant, but found that "Dhrupad was my calling". Today he performs and teaches at the Dhrupad Gurukul in Delhi.
"Look at the life of an aspiring Dhrupad musician. There are many uncertainties. First, he/she must listen to good music to get inspired. Then, he/she must learn and pursue the art form devoting all their time to it. At the end of it, it is difficult to predict if the performer will be a successful one and secure a livelihood from its pursuit."
