Dilshad Khan, born on September 4, 1983, in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, hails from the esteemed Sikar Gharana of music, known for its contributions to Indian classical music. He is the tenth generation Sarangi player, with roots tracing back to his great grandfather, Ustad Azim Khan Sahab, a renowned court musician in Sikar, Rajasthan.
Initiating his musical journey at six, Dilshad received early training from his grandfather, Ustad Gulab Khan Sahab, and father, Ustad Nasir Khan Sahab, both esteemed musicians. Later, he honed his skills under the tutelage of his uncle, Padma Bhushan Ustad Sultan Khan Sahab, a globally acclaimed Sarangi virtuoso and vocalist, credited with revitalizing the instrument.
Dilshad's musical prowess was evident from a young age, as he performed at the All India Radio Youth festival in Jodhpur at ten. Today, he commands the Sarangi with exceptional skill, reminiscent of his great uncle's mastery. He frequently shares the stage with Ustad Sultan Khan Sahab and performs solo, showcasing his talent alongside renowned artists like Ustad Zakir Hussain and Pt. Birju Maharaj.
His collaborations span genres and continents, including a Grammy-winning album with Ustad Zakir Hussain and performances at prestigious venues worldwide, such as the Royal Albert Hall in London. In Bollywood, Dilshad's Sarangi melodies have graced over 500 films, including blockbusters like "Devdas" and "Dangal."
Recognized for his contributions, Dilshad received the Aga Khan Music Award in Muscat in 2022. His presence at major music festivals and concerts across India, coupled with international acclaim, solidifies his status as a beacon for the younger generation in the realm of music, promising a bright future ahead.
