Begin your musical journey in the Hindustani tradition of North India, where 19-year-old Hussain coaxes the hauntingly beautiful voice of the sarangi —an instrument often described as the closest to the human cry. Its 39 strings resonate with centuries of emotion as Hussain’s bow work brings ancient ragas to life with spellbinding intimacy. Accompanying him is tabla virtuoso Pandya, whose rhythmic mastery provides both structure and spontaneity. Together, they’ll guide you through the meditative alaap into increasingly intricate rhythmic passages, building to moments of exhilarating intensity.

After the interval, immerse yourself in the Carnatic tradition as Tapasya’s crystalline vocals navigate the ornate melodic patterns of South Indian ragas. Her voice finds perfect complement in Srikanth’s expressive violin, which shadows, echoes and challenges the vocal line with remarkable agility.

The percussive foundation comes alive through Kumar’s mridangam (barrel-shaped drum played with palms and fingers) and Udupa’s clay pot percussion, creating intricate rhythmic landscapes that showcase the mathematical precision for which Carnatic music is renowned.

An impromptu performance by Debasmita Bhattacharya with Patri Satish Kumar and Ghatam Udupa, recorded at Ravenna Festival, Italy in 2017. Musicians: - Debasmita Bhattacharya (Sarod) - Patri Satish Kumar (Mridangam) - Giridhar Udupa (Ghatam) Raag Jog; Thaat: Kafi; Samay: Night An impromptu sitting of Debasmita Bhattacharya on sarod accompanied by two of India's finest percussionists, Patri Satish Kumar on mridangam and Ghatam Udupa. In their first sitting together, Debasmita performs Raag Jog from the Kafi thaat. This is a very unique and special performance. Debasmita Bhattacharya is one of India’s finest young sarod players, representing the rich musical tradition of her native Kolkata. Her style blends the expansive mindset of modern musicians with an old-school patience. She began learning with her sarodi father Debashish Bhattacharya, then entered the tutelage of the late maestro Buddhadev Das Gupta. She made an acclaimed UK debut in 2017, and continues to demonstrate that gender should be no barrier to instrumental mastery. “[The sarod] is considered as a male dominated instrument…I accepted the challenge and every morning I try to prove myself by improving my playing...music has no boundaries...it is only for the human.” Subscribe to the Darbar Player to access the full, uncut performance.
