Not an old or traditional raga, its invention is attributed to Saint Gorakhnath of eastern Uttar Pradesh. Despite its name, this somber but beautiful raga has nothing to do with ‘Kalyan’

In the lower part of the octave, it strongly resembles Bageshri, but its RMD phrase brings in the shades of Durga. Its residing pensive mood gives lots of scope for meend-laden chords.
