U Srinivas

Uppalapu “U.” Srinivas (28 February 1969 – 19 September 2014) was a groundbreaking Carnatic mandolin virtuoso who revolutionised Indian classical music. Born in Palakollu, Andhra Pradesh, he began learning mandolin under his father, U. Satyanarayana, from the age of five. By age nine, he was performing publicly, fully mastering the instrument’s adaptation to Carnatic music—a testament to his extraordinary musical intellect and rhythmic agility.

Srinivas transformed the mandolin for classical use—modifying it to a five-string electric version to suit gamakas and Carnatic phrasing—with his distinctive style earning him the titles “Mandolin Samrat” and “Mozart of Indian Classical Music.” He was awarded the Padma Shri (1998) and Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (2009). His prolific collaborations spanned boundaries: he performed with Western artists like John McLaughlin (Remember Shakti), Michael Brook, Michael Nyman, Nigel Kennedy, and Nana Vasconcelos, and within India with Zakir Hussain and Hariprasad Chaurasia.

U. Srinivas’s influence endures through the Srinivas Institute of World Music, where he mentored over one hundred students worldwide, including his brother U. Rajesh, who continues the mandolin tradition. His pioneering use of the mandolin in Carnatic music inspired generations of instrumentalists to cross cultural boundaries and explore fusion, ensuring his legacy lives on through both his disciples and global concert traditions.
