Anuradha Pal

Anuradha Pal, born and raised in Mumbai, is widely recognised as the world’s first professional female tabla maestro. Beginning her musical journey with vocal training at age six, she later took up tabla lessons under the Benaras gharana masters Shri Manikrao Popatkar and Pandit Madan Mishra. At age nine, she began solo performances on All India Radio and Doordarshan, and by her teenage years had become the first woman to break into a male-dominated percussion tradition. Later, she further honed her craft under the legendary Ustads Alla Rakha and Zakir Hussain, mastering six different tabla gharanas and Carnatic tala—developing prowess acknowledged by the Encyclopaedia Britannica and Limca Book of Records.

Anuradha has performed in over 7,000 concerts across 30+ countries, including landmark appearances at WOMAD and Woodstock festivals, where she was the youngest and only female Indian musician. She founded Stree Shakti—India’s first all-female percussion ensemble—and led pioneering fusion projects such as Recharge! and SuFoRe, collaborating with global musicians from jazz, Latin, African, and Flamenco traditions. Her compositions include the entirely tabla-and-vocal score for M.F. Husain’s Gaja Gamini, showcased at Cannes. A top-graded artist with AIR, Doordarshan, and ICCR, she has also been honoured with awards such as the President’s “First Ladies” award, Maharashtra Rajya Sanskrutik Puraskar, FICCI Woman of Excellence, and the Dagar Gharana Samman.

Anuradha Pal enriched the rhythmic tapestry of Darbar Festival 2009 with a compelling tabla performance that drew high praise. Critics highlighted her melodic percussive storytelling and remarkable technical command, noting how she effortlessly balanced the spiritual depth of classical accompaniment with engaging innovation. She was described as quiet yet commanding, earning encores and audience applause that reflected her mastery and persuasive stage presence. Her performance at Darbar marked a significant milestone—illustrating how her tabla transcends time and gender boundaries to speak universally through rhythm.
