Arati Ankalikar-Tikekar

Arati Ankalikar Tikekar, born on January 27, 1963 in Karnataka, is one of the most respected vocalists in the realm of Hindustani classical music. Her musical journey began under the tutelage of Pt. Vasantrao Kulkarni of the Agra-Gwalior gharana, followed by intensive training with Gana Saraswati Smt. Kishori Amonkar of the Jaipur-Atrauli gharana. She further honed her craft under Pt. Dinkar Kaikini, refining a distinct style that gracefully blends the traditions of all three gharanas. With a resonant, expressive voice and a deep command over raga and rhythm, Arati’s music reflects both technical brilliance and emotional depth, making her a revered figure in the Indian classical music community.

Throughout her career, Arati has received numerous accolades, including two National Film Awards for Best Female Playback Singer and the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2020. Her playback work in acclaimed films such as Sardari Begum, De Dhakka, and Ek Hazarachi Note showcases her versatility across genres and languages. She has been a recipient of the Pt. Kumar Gandharva Sanman and the Pt. Jasraj Award, and won multiple gold medals in national competitions held by All India Radio. Internationally, she has performed extensively as a cultural ambassador for India across the USA, UK, UAE, Australia, and more. Arati has collaborated with notable accompanists and continues to mentor the next generation through her gurukul in Pune and as senior faculty at the University of Pune.

At the Darbar Festival 2011 in London, Arati Ankalikar Tikekar delivered a soul-stirring performance, accompanied by Chinmay Kolhatkar on harmonium and Anubrata Chatterjee on tabla. Her recital was a testament to her ability to transcend technique and connect directly with the audience’s heart. With fluid improvisations and deep introspection, she navigated complex ragas with grace and clarity, drawing on her rich training in multiple gharanas. The collaboration with Kolhatkar and Chatterjee added rhythmic vibrancy and melodic depth, creating a nuanced interplay between voice and accompaniment that left a lasting impression on connoisseurs and new listeners alike.
