Arshad Khan is a leading exponent of the esraj, a rare bowed-fretted instrument from Bengal, long associated with Sikh devotional music. The esraj has been declining in popularity for decades, but is enjoying a resurgence thanks to the ‘Gurmat Sangeet’ revival movement of Sikh spiritual song. Arshad plays classically as well as bringing his instrument’s rich, vocalistic tone to soundtracks and fusion projects.

In 2017, Arshad Khan performed at the Darbar Festival, accompanied by Shahbaz Hussain on tabla. During this concert, he presented Raag Madhuvanti and Raag Bhairavi, showcasing the esraj’s emotive capabilities and his profound mastery over the instrument.

The esraj is a bowed instrument with sympathetic strings, creating a unique and melodious sound. Arshad Khan comes from a musical lineage, as he is the son of Ustad Allauddin Khan, a legendary figure in Indian classical music. Arshad Khan has gained recognition for his exceptional skill and contributions to the world of Indian classical music. His performances often showcase the intricate techniques and emotive qualities of the esraj, captivating audiences around the world. In 2017 he played Raag Madhuvanti. Raag madhuvanti is a melodic framework or raga in Indian classical music. It is known for its soothing and romantic character, often associated with the late evening hours. Madhuvanti features a pentatonic scale with five notes, and it is a combination of the Poorvi and Bhairavi thaat. The raga allows for creative expression, enabling musicians to evoke emotions of longing, tenderness, and introspection through its distinct melodic phrases and ornamentations.
