Dr. Charulatha Mani
Dr. Charulatha Mani (born 20 January 1984 in Chennai) is a celebrated Carnatic vocalist, playback singer, and ethnomusicologist. Trained from a young age in the Carnatic tradition, she completed her formal Carnatic music training by 1999 and has since forged a reputation for blending classical rigor with modern innovation. In 2019, she earned her PhD from Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University (Australia), researching the hybridisation of Carnatic music and early Italian opera, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship exploring lullaby traditions worldwide.
Dr. Mani is the creator and host of Isai Payanam, a popular multimedia concert format and YouTube series with over 200 K subscribers, which explores the interplay of ragas in Carnatic and film music. She has received numerous honours, including the M.S. Subbulakshmi Endowment Award (2008), Yuva Kala Bharathi (2005), and Best Young Vocalist awards from renowned sabhas like Narada Gana Sabha and Sri Krishna Gana Sabha. As a playback singer, she has recorded tracks for Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi films, and appeared on national television with series like Isai Payanam and Isai Cafe.
Beyond her performances, Dr. Mani has emerged as a global ambassador for cross-cultural musical dialogue. Her work in academic research and multimedia helps bridge classical traditions and contemporary audiences, particularly through her hybrid repertory approach. While she hasn’t formally established a lineage of students yet, her online tutorials and scholarly contributions are shaping a new generation of musicians worldwide. Her innovative format and deep musical insights have positioned her among the most influential figures in today’s Carnatic music landscape.
