Gundecha Brothers
The Gundecha Brothers, Umakant and Ramakant, were among the foremost vocalists of the Dhrupad tradition in Indian classical music, representing the Dagar vani style. Trained under the legendary Ustad Zia Fariduddin Dagar and Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar at the Dhrupad Kendra in Bhopal, they became known for their powerful and meditative renditions of this ancient genre. With a strong foundation in classical technique and deep devotion to the guru-shishya tradition, they played a pivotal role in bringing Dhrupad to contemporary national and global audiences.
Their contributions to Indian classical music earned them numerous awards, including the Padma Shri in 2012, the Kumar Gandharva Award, and the National Film Award for Best Music Direction. The brothers performed extensively in India and over 25 countries, appearing at prestigious festivals and institutions. They collaborated with top percussionist Akhilesh Gundecha and interpreted the works of poets like Kabir and Tulsidas in the Dhrupad style. Their vast discography spans major music labels and international broadcasts, and their teaching legacy continues through workshops and the Dhrupad Sansthan they established in Bhopal.
At the Darbar Festival, the Gundecha Brothers left a deep impact with their commanding performances. In 2010, Umakant and Ramakant, accompanied by Akhilesh Gundecha on pakhawaj, delivered a spellbinding concert that highlighted the spiritual depth and timelessness of Dhrupad. By 2019, following Ramakant’s passing, Umakant was joined by Anant Gundecha, Ramakant’s son, marking an emotional yet resolute continuation of their musical lineage. Their presence at Darbar affirmed not only their mastery but also their enduring role as torchbearers of the Dhrupad tradition.
