Harikumar Sivan

Harikumar Sivan (b. 1980) is a celebrated violinist adept across Carnatic, Hindustani, and Western genres. Born in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, he began learning violin from his father at age seven and made his debut recital at age nine. He trained under vocalist Anantha Lekshmi Venkitaraman, Chalakkudy Narayana Swami, and later the legendary Dr. L. Subramaniam in both violin technique and cross-genre expression. By age sixteen, he had earned All India Radio’s prestigious A-grade, showcasing his depth in both tradition and innovation.

Harikumar’s acclaim spans international tours and collaborations. He’s performed with tabla maestro Pandit Kishan Maharaj and Anindo Chatterjee, and Western artists including Jean-Luc Ponty. Based in Delhi before relocating to London in 2006, he formed the fusion ensemble Blue Fire, releasing the acclaimed album Breath Taker, which was featured among top world-music records. A skilled innovator, he also plays 7- and 11-string electric violin, blending melody and rhythm with technical prowess.

At the Darbar Festival 2007 in Leicester, Harikumar Sivan enriched the program with two key performances. In one session, his 7-string violin led a moving bhajan recital of “Raghupati Raghava Raja Ram”, accompanied by Neyveli Venkatesh (mridangam) and R.N. Prakash (ghatam). In another, his spirited presentation of Thyagaraja’s Raag Saraswatikriti “Anuragamu Leni Manasuna” in Rupak tala was highlighted by imaginative swaraprastharas and rhythmic precision, resonating deeply with the audience and marking him as a striking cross-genre voice at the festival.
