Indrani Mukherjee

Indrani Mukherjee is a vocalist from Kolkata, who performs khayal in the Kirana-Rampur style and thumri in Purab Ang. Her mother and father were, respectively, a singer and an architect – after early training in the family she studied under gurus from Allahabad and Benares and was selected as a scholar of the ITC Sangeet Research Academy.

She received taleem from Pandit Arun Bhaduri towards the end of his life, along with extended stints of study by Vidushi Purnima Choudhury, Pandit Ramashreya Jha, and Vidushi Manju Sundaram. She now pursues a successful performance career, singing around the world and appearing at major festivals back home.

“When I was around 14 years old, my grandfather, who was my first guru, asked me what is my aim in life? He gave me a few days to make my decision and let him know. After a great deal of thinking, I wrote to my grandfather that ‘ami gayeka hote chai’ [I want to be a vocalist].”

In November 2017, Indrani Mukherjee performed an array of midnight and morning ragas at the Lilian Baylis Studio in Islington’s Sadler’s Wells as part of Darbar Festival. She was accompanied by Milind Kulkarni as well as Sanju Sahai on the 10^th and Gurdain Rayatt on the 12^th, respectively, delivering an immersive experience that highlighted the depth and beauty of her vocal artistry.
