Kandiah Sithamparanathan

Kandiah Sithamparanathan is a seasoned South Indian percussionist, specializing in the kanjira (frame drum) and moorsing (jaw harp). While based in London, he has been integral to the UK’s Carnatic music scene, actively supporting touring artists and local ensembles. With deep training in traditional techniques, his nuanced tonal control and rhythmic precision have made him a trusted accompanist in both classical Carnatic concerts and cross-genre collaborations.

Throughout his career, Sithamparanathan has accompanied prominent vocal and instrumental Carnatic artists, enhancing evening recitals and fusion projects alike. His expertise has been showcased in dance performances, such as accompanying Kuchipudi and Bharatanatyam artists, where his rhythmic interplay garnered praise. In addition to his concert work, he has also been active in educating UK-based percussion students, contributing to workshops and masterclasses during cultural events and festivals.

At the Darbar Festival 2012 in London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall Foyer, Kardiah Sithamparanathan performed a collaborative percussion set as part of a Carnatic ensemble. He joined Thevarajah Pirashanna (mridangam), Bangalore Prathap (ghatam), and Aravindhan Baheerathan (bansuri) in a vibrant rhythmic performance showcasing traditional talavadya (percussion ensemble) music. His precision on kanjira added crisp, melodic punctuation to the ensemble’s interplay and was acknowledged for enhancing the event’s immersive, transcultural soundscape.
