Lalgudi GJR Krishnan
The Lalgudi siblings are the torchbearers of their eponymous violin gharana, named for their late father Lalgudi G Jayaraman – one of Carnatic music’s ‘violin trinity’. The family claim a direct lineage back to Thyagaraja, an 18th century saint-musician revered by Carnatic aficionados, with a style marked by superb lyrical expression and divine melodic ornamentations.
After a childhood of training under his father and grandfather Lalgudi Gopala Iyer, GJR Krishnan embarked on what has become a stellar career (he thankfully abandoning a job in cost accounting to focus on music full-time). Today he is known as a violinist, vocalist, and composer, commanding respect for duets with his sister and individual performances alike.
Lalgudi GRJ Krishnan performed at the Darbar Festival in 2018 alongside Lalgudi Vijayalakshmi, Dr. Trichy Sankaran, and Giridhar Udupa. Their collaborative performance showcased the rich tradition of Carnatic music, blending intricate rhythms and melodies that captivated the audience. Krishnan’s contribution to the ensemble, with his expressive violin playing, added a unique depth to the performance, highlighting his mastery of the art form and his ability to work seamlessly with other virtuoso musicians.
