Pandit Debojyoti Bose
Pandit Debojyoti Bose (b. December 20, 1962, Kolkata) hails from a fourth-generation musical family rooted in both percussion and melody—his father, Pandit Biswanath Bose, was a respected tabla exponent of the Benaras gharana, and his mother, Bharati Bose, a trained sitarist under Ustad Mushtaq Ali Khan and Ustad Ali Akbar Khan. He began his musical journey with initial vocal and instrument training from his mother and elder brother Jayanta Bose. Demonstrating early promise, he went on to study sarod under Padma Vibhushan Ustad Amjad Ali Khan for over 25 years, firmly establishing himself in the Senia Bangash gharana tradition.
A top-graded artist on All India Radio, Pandit Bose has won prestigious honors such as the Ustad Hafiz Ali Khan Scholarship (1981), Kal-ke-Kalakar Award (1984, at BHU), and Anandalok Award (1999). He has performed widely—from India’s leading festivals like Dover Lane, Saptak, and Tansen Samaroh to international venues in the US, UK, Australia, Russia, China, and beyond. Under the guidance of Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, he also ventured into composition and music direction, scoring films and non-fiction TV shows. As a cultural ambassador under ICCR, he has toured extensively, and in 2022 was awarded West Bengal’s highest honor, the Banga Bibhushan, for his outstanding contribution to classical music.
Beyond solo performance, Pandit Bose has significantly impacted the next generation through teaching and orchestral projects. He regularly collaborates with tabla stalwarts like Pandit Abhijit Banerjee and has co-led initiatives such as the National Youth Orchestra (composed by Ustad Amjad Ali Khan) and the Bharatiya Vadya Jhankar orchestra workshops nationwide. Among his students is Monit Pal, a sarodist who performed in the US-based Rasa Festival in 2020 under his guidance. Another disciple, Rohen Bose, has accompanied at major Indian classical events, providing tabla support at the Guru Debaprasad Das Award Festival alongside Ronu Majumdar, evidencing his role in nurturing performers who appear on prominent stages.
