Pandit Joydeep Ghosh
Pandit Joydeep Ghosh is a distinguished Indian classical musician known for his mastery over the sarod, surshringar, and mohan veena. Born into a musical lineage and beginning his training at the tender age of five, he studied under legendary figures of the Shahjahanpur sarod gharana such as Sangeetacharya Anil Roychoudhury, Radhika Mohan Moitra, and Padma Bhushan Buddhadev Dasgupta. His training also included laykari under tabla maestros like Pt. Amal Sarkar and Ustad Shaukat Ali Khan, vocal music with Sangeetacharya Amaresh Chandra Choudhury of the Senia Gharana, and further refinement under the versatile Pt. Bimalendu Mukherjee of the Imdadkhani gharana. This diverse foundation shaped his unique style that blends gayaki, tantrakari, raag-vistar, and rhythmic intricacy.
Throughout his career, Pt. Ghosh has received numerous accolades including scholarships and fellowships from the Government of India, and top positions in national music competitions. He holds prestigious titles such as ‘Surmani’ from Sur Singar Samsad (Mumbai), ‘Swarshree’ from Swarankur, and the coveted ‘Top Grade’ artist designation by All India Radio. His performances have graced major festivals across India and abroad, including tours in the USA, UK, France, Germany, and Scandinavia. As a collaborative artist, he has performed with some of the finest exponents of Indian classical music and has also contributed significantly to music education during his tenure as Associate Professor at Indira Kala Sangit University, Khairagarh.
At the Darbar Festival in 2012, Pandit Joydeep Ghosh mesmerized audiences with a rare and evocative performance on the surshringar, an instrument seldom heard on modern concert stages. His appearance marked one of the first times the surshringar had been showcased live in the UK, captivating listeners with its deep, resonant timbre and expressive melodic range. Accompanied by tabla, his performance combined technical mastery with emotional depth, leaving a lasting impression and introducing a new generation to the rich legacy of this nearly forgotten instrument.
