Professor Pandit Swapan Siva is a renowned tabla maestro and educator from Kolkata, deeply rooted in the Farrukhabad gharana. As a disciple of Ustad Karamatullah Khan, he began his musical journey early, immersing himself in complex rhythmic patterns and classical traditions. He later established himself as a respected teacher in Kolkata, where his home became a vibrant hub for talim (tabla training), nurturing numerous students from a young age
Swapan Siva has had a profound impact both as a performer and pedagogue. He has accompanied prominent classical musicians, including Pt. V.G. Jog, Pt. Manas Chakraborty, and Pt. Arun Bhaduri, showcasing his rhythmic versatility across violin and vocal genres. However, teaching has been at the core of his work—over 3,000 students have honed their craft under his guidance. He cherishes the guru–shishya connection, often personally mentoring those with extraordinary dedication, such as Subhankar Banerjee.
Swapan Siva is widely acknowledged as one of Kolkata’s most influential tabla gurus, with his teaching legacy carried forward by disciples who continue to enrich Indian classical music. His daughter (whom he is pictured with above), Rimpa Siva—a trailblazing tabla soloist at both national and international platforms—stands as a testament to his mentorship; she performed at the Darbar Festival in 2007 alongside sarangi master Sandeep Mishra. Other celebrated disciples include Subhankar Banerjee, known for accompanying luminaries like Amjad Ali Khan, Rashid Khan, and Shivkumar Sharma.
