Sanjay Subrahmanyum
Sanjay Subrahmanyan (b. 21 January 1968, Chennai) is one of today’s most influential Carnatic vocalists. Born into a family immersed in music, he began studying violin and vocal at a young age under mentors like V. Lakshminarayana, Rukmini Rajagopalan, and later Calcutta’s K. S. Krishnamurthi, before receiving advanced training from Nadaswaram maestro S. R. D. Vaidyanathan. His style combines deep respect for tradition with fresh, inventive improvisation.
Sanjay Subrahmanyan was awarded the prestigious Sangita Kalanidhi by the Madras Music Academy in 2015—one of the highest honors in Carnatic music. He has an active online and social media presence, offering insights into his music and sharing performances via his website and platforms like Instagram and Spotify . Collaborating widely, he’s performed alongside luminaries such as Anoushka Shankar and jazz artists like Sean Roldan, and contributed to Coke Studio Tamil and film music, showcasing his creative versatility.
At the Darbar Festival 2008, Sanjay Subrahmanyan made a powerful impact with a full ragam–tanam–pallavi in Nattakurinji alongside violinist S. Varadarajan, mridangam by Neyveli Venkatesh, and ghatam by R. N. Prakash.
