Satyajit Talwalkar

Master percussionist Satyajit Talwalkar balances rhythmic poise and highly explosive improvisation on his tabla.

His intricate performances, be they solo or in accompaniment, feature catchy tempos, unanticipated crescendos and compositions embellished with dexterous agility and skill. The rhythm he provides helps bring out the best in each instrument, his beat pulsating within the entire performance and reverberating within the audience’s consciousness. 

Talwalkar stands true to the training he received from his father, Pandit Suresh Talwalkar, starting from the age of four. His modulation of the bass from the bayan [left hand] and the hummingbird-like action on the dayan [right hand] enriches his distinct sound and melodic flow, and his style provides enough scope for melody to blend into rhythm, making it a balanced representation of both these aspects of music. He is the recipient of multiple awards, including the Bharatratna Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar by the Sangeet Natak Academy.

Satyajit Talwalkar has been a prominent figure at the Darbar Festival, gracing its stage multiple times with his exceptional rhythmic artistry. His most recent performance in February 2025 was a remarkable collaboration with the renowned sitar maestro Niladri Kumar. This duo delivered an electrifying performance that seamlessly blended traditional ragas with contemporary flair, captivating the audience with their intricate interplay and profound musical dialogue. Talwalkar’s deep understanding of rhythm and Kumar’s innovative approach to the sitar resulted in a memorable concert that highlighted the evolving landscape of Indian classical music.
