Ustad Munawar Ali Khan
Ustad Munawar Ali Khan (15 August 1930 – 13 October 1989) was a leading vocalist of the Kasur Patiala gharana, renowned for both classical khayal and semi-classical light forms. Born in Lahore, he was the younger son of the legendary Bade Ghulam Ali Khan and received musical training from his father and uncle Barkat Ali Khan. He accompanied his ailing father in performances following a stroke in 1961, developing his own artistry and distinguishing himself with a full-throated, open aakar and expansive vocal expressions.
After Bade Ghulam Ali Khan’s passing in 1968, Munawar Ali embarked on a successful solo career as a top-graded artist for All India Radio and as a teacher at Bharatiya Kala Kendra in Delhi. He toured extensively—performing across Europe, Australia, USA, UK, France, Germany, and representing India in Afghanistan and Pakistan. A prolific composer, he created new bandishes in khayal, thumri, and ghazal styles and introduced the raga Malini Basant to the Patiala repertoire.
As a mentor, he shaped a new generation of singers, including his son Raza Ali Khan—a Darbar Festival performer—and nephews Mazhar, Jawaad, and Naqi Ali Khan. Notable students also include Ajoy Chakraborty—whose daughter Kaushiki Chakraborty has since become a Darbar regular—as well as Sanjukta Ghosh and Sangeeta Bandyopadhyay. . Through his compositions, recordings, and lineage, Ustad Munawar Ali Khan significantly fortified the Patiala tradition, ensuring its vibrant continuity on major classical stages worldwide.
