Ustad Rashid Khan

Ustad Rashid Khan (1 July 1968 – 9 January 2024) was a master vocalist of the Rampur-Sahaswan gharana, born in Sahaswan, Uttar Pradesh. He began his rigorous training under his grand‑uncle, the esteemed Ustad Nissar Hussain Khan, and continued under his uncle Ghulam Mustafa Khan and at the ITC Sangeet Research Academy. Known for his rich, resonant voice and deeply introspective vilambit khayal, Rashid also excelled in tarana, sargam, and emotional expression, blending influences from Amir Khan and Bhimsen Joshi into his own distinctive style.

Rashid Khan earned major accolades including the Padma Shri (2006), Padma Bhushan (2022), and Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (2006), as well as West Bengal’s Banga Bibhushan. His career included star performances at prestigious conferences like Dover Lane, SRA Sangeet Sammelan, and Lalit Kala festivals. Known for collaborations with sitarist Shahid Parvez and fusion projects with jazz maestro Louis Banks, he also ventured into film playback (e.g., Jab We Met, My Name Is Khan) and released a Rabindra Sangeet album, “Baithaki Rabi”.

A revered teacher, Rashid served as a guru at ITC Sangeet Research Academy, nurturing the next generation through lectures, workshops, and recordings. His legacy lives on in classical training, gharana propagation, and the expressive power his music continues to impart on modern performers.
