Vidushi R. Vedavalli

Vidushi R. Vedavalli (born 9 November 1935 in Mannargudi, Tamil Nadu) is one of Carnatic music’s most revered voices. Recognised for her prodigious talent early on, she began training at age five under Sangita Kalanidhi Madurai Srirangam Iyengar. She later studied intensively for over two decades with Mudicondan Venkatarama Iyer, and refined her skills in padam, javali, and pallavi under Smt. T. Mukta and Venkataramana Iyer, supported by a prestigious Central Government scholarship.

Vedavalli has won top awards since her youth, including All India Radio’s first prizes for both classical and light classical music. She was honoured with the Sangeetha Kalasikhamani (1995) and the coveted Sangita Kalanidhi title from the Madras Music Academy (2000). A respected educator, she served at the Tamil Nadu Music Academy Teacher’s College and later as a Professor at the Government College of Music, Adyar. She has toured globally and performed lecture-demonstrations in North America and Southeast Asia.

As a scholar-performer, Vedavalli is deeply devoted to preserving classical tradition—reconstructing rare padams and javalis, and remaining faithful to early Carnatic texts. She has mentored a number of musicians, including Sumitra Vasudev and her daughter Sushruti Santhanam, the latter now teaching in Pune. Though neither disciple has yet appeared at Darbar Festival, Vedavalli’s emphasis on scholarly depth and melodic clarity continues to inspire artists across genres and festivals, enriching Indian classical traditions.
