Debasmita Bhattacharya, Satyajit Talwalkar

Experience the mesmerising artistry of Debasmita Bhattacharya, one of the most brilliant sarod players of her generation. Bhattacharya’s profound musicality and technical virtuosity has captivated audiences worldwide, continuing the illustrious legacy of the Senia Shahjahanpur gharana (school) with her soulful interpretations and innovative approach to this magnificent instrument – traversing from meditative serenity to exhilarating technical passages that will leave you breathless.

Acclaimed percussionist Satyajit Talwalkar brings rhythmic brilliance to the stage with his masterful tabla playing. Representing the prestigious Talwalkar gharana, Talwalkar combines technical precision with creative spontaneity, creating intricate rhythmic patterns that both honour tradition and push artistic boundaries.

SECOND HALF

Pandit Premkumar Mallick and Prashant Mallick

Surdarshan Chana

Step into the timeless realm of dhrupad—India’s oldest and most evolved surviving classical vocal tradition—with the extraordinary father-son duo of Pandit Premkumar Mallick and Prashant Mallick.

Representing the revered Darbhanga gharana, these master vocalists preserve an unbroken musical lineage stretching back centuries. Their profound, meditative performances begin with the expansive alaap—where syllables unfold with deliberate patience, exploring every subtle nuance of the raga without rhythmic accompaniment. As the pakhawaj (drum) enters, experience the mathematical precision and spiritual depth that defines this most sacred form of Indian classical music. The Mallicks’ resonant voices move in perfect harmony, building intricate patterns that showcase both technical virtuosity and emotional depth.

This is a special opportunity to witness authentic Dhrupad—increasingly uncommon even in India. It offers a glimpse into this genre’s capacity for spiritual transcendence. The controlled power of the Mallicks’ vocalisation creates an almost hypnotic atmosphere, revealing new dimensions of musical expression beyond conventional boundaries.

Prem Kumar & Prashant Mallick | Raag Shudh Sarang

Prem Kumar & Prashant Mallick | Raag Shudh Sarang

Recorded at Darbar Festival 2007, on 13th April, at the Phoenix Theatre, Leicester. Musicians: - Pandit Prem Kumar Mallick (dhrupad) - Prashant Mallick (dhrupad) - Ravi Shankar Upadhyay (pakhawaj) - Debipriya Das & Gunwant Kaur (Tanpuras) Raag Shudh Sarang; Thaat: Kalyan; Samay: Late Morning Demonstrating a striking balance between melody and rhythm, Pandit Prem Kumar Mallick and his son Prashant Mallick present raga Shudh Sarang from the dhrupad tradition of the Darbhanga gharana. The gharana is based on the Gauhar vani syllable, representing pure melody and spontaneous laykari. Shyam Kalyan (‘Evening Kalyan‘) is a prachalit Kalyan variant. Ga is used sparingly in ascent, and typically skipped in phrases which run through the scale sequentially, and shuddha ma is taken in descent only – while Re is emphasised throughout, and Pa is available as a resting note. As per Tanarang‘s summary, the raga is “a very melodious mixture of Kalyan and Kamod…one should render RMPNS rather than GMPNS, and Ni can sometimes be skipped in avroh“. It bears some resemblance to Shuddha Sarang, while being distinguished by the use of Ga in characteristic vakra phrases such as MPGmR and GmPGmR. Pandit Premkumar Mallick is a leading exponent of the Darbhanga Dhrupad court music tradition, named for a former state near the Nepalese border. It is said that his ancestor once ended a drought in the area through singing the rain-bringing Raag Megh, and the family still live on land gifted to them by the Maharajah as a result. He often performs with family members including Samit and Ramkumar. Their style of Dhrupad is marked by intricate rhythmic elaboration and a lively approach to composed forms, as well as strong poetic influence.
